A Bit A Bout Inside Rowing The Outside Handbook

Way back, in the year of Our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty nine, the Stroke and 6 man of a rough and ready Neptune Rowing Club Senior VIII did, with malice aforethought, conspire to compile an illustrated book of humorous verse that took a sidelong glance at the sport of rowing as they had, and were currently, experiencing it.

The main instigator of this venture was one B. Currivan. He, encouraged by the drunken applause that he had “occasionally” received after reciting one of his self penned ditties at some club function or other, asked aspiring animator and crewmate G.O’Neill to supply some illustrations to break the relentless monotony of his iambic pentametering. Young and innocent O’Neill fell for it and supplied the requested drawerings.

The result of this collaboration was Inside Rowing The Outside Handbook. The book was, of course, snapped up by the more erudite and arty types among the Irish rowing fraternity ( all five of them). That said, the initial print run of 1,500 copies was more or less sold within about a year. This amounted to a thundering success when you take into consideration that this was in the pre-internet era, and that most copies were sold on a one to one basis, with Menaces and Guilt Trips being the only marketing tools available.

Over the intervening years Gary O’Neill proceeded to practice his honest trade and hone his skills with various top ranking animation studios. He is now the proprietor of his own production Company (ZINC FILMS Ltd see www.joeyotoole.com/ ) and you can’t turn on the telly without coming across an ad’ that they have not have some hand act or part in.

With the exception of a sustained period of radio work during in the 90’s, B.Currivan has managed to hold his whisht on the versification front until now..... only 20 years later and he’s already thinking about bringing out a new collection. You’re right! The guy’s a veritable book factory. Prolific or Wha’?

BUT FIRST...... The joys of Inside Rowing the Outside Handbook must be shared with a new generation of rowers. To carry out this educational public service I.R.O.H. will again be available to the general public from mid December 2009. See Relaunch.pdf
